Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disease which outcomes affect almost all domains of life of patients. Depending on the form of the disease, these results can be more or less noticeable. The research was conducted with the aim of determining the level of self-perception of social support for patients with MS. Given the current situation of the global pandemic, the questionnaire was posted online, and respondents ( N = 75; women 62 ) answered questions taken from the standardized MSQLI test related to the examination of self-perception of social support, MSSS – Modified social support survey. In addition to basic demographic data (gender, age, and form of the disease), the MSSS consists of 18 items arranged in four subscales that express tangible, emotional, affective, and support for positive social interactions. The obtained data were processed by non-parametric analysis, and the results showed that the respondents perceive a high level of social support on the overall score, as well as on all subscales individually. However, by comparing the results of the subscales with each other, statistical significance (p <.001) was observed in the relation tangible- affective support, positive social interactions-emotional support and emotional- affective support.

When interpreting the results, it should be considerd that the largest number of subjects was diagnosed with a milder form of MS (relapsing-remitting form, N = 52), and it is suggested that the study should be repeated in the future but on a larger and more representative sample.
