Abstract

Introduction: Cerebral palsy is a disability that affects individuals throughout their lifespan. Adults with CP are at risk for many secondary conditions such as pain and fatigue which have a significant impact on quality of life.

The aim: To allocate and analyze researches which had the assessment of secondary conditions of cerebral palsy, pain and fatigue, and their frequency in adults with cerebral palsy.

Methods: We were searching the medical literature using PubMed and keywords: cerebral palsy, older people with cerebral palsy, aging with cerebral palsy, secondary conditions.

Results: Studies of health in adults with cerebral palsy have identified pain as a significant concern. Activity and participation in adults with cerebral palsy seem to be only moderately affected by presence of pain. The majority of adults with pain had pain on a daily basis. Lower extremity and back pain were the most common pain sites. Pain and fatigue are more prevalent in females and older age groups, Adults reported many factors that exacerbate pain (eg, stress or weather) or decrease it (eg, exercise or rest. Pain is inadequately assessed and treated in this patient population.

Conclusion: The data suggest that pain and fatigue are common in adults with cerebral palsy. Potential causes of pain should be identified and addressed early to mitigate the negative impact of pain on quality of life.
