Abstract

Introduction. Disorder in speech and language development that is not a consequence of intellectual disability, traumatic damage or other neurological diseases, sensory impairments, social deprivations or disorders of reciprocal social interactions, is called specific language impairment (SLI). The aim of this paper was to evaluate certain aspects of speech and language abilities, pragmatic competence and social functioning of children with SLI.

Methods. The sample consisted of 31 children with a SLI, both sexes, aged between four and eight years. For the assessment of communicative abilities, Children’s Communication Checklist (CCC-2) was used, which is standardized and adapted to our speaking area (Glumbić, 2010). The research was carried out in Foča, Bileca and Trebinje during July 2018.
The results. The results obtained by examining speech and language abilities showed that the worst results were examined on the subscale of Speech (AS = 8.52), while in the domain of pragmatic abilities the worst results were obtained in coherences (AS = 9.42) and using language in context (AS = 10.61). Respondents with a low overall score of ability to communicate (GCC) have a low pragmatic composite score (PC). The SIDC score was not lower than -16, which in our participants excluded the suspicion of autistic spectrum disorders.
Conclusion. Children with a SLI express lower development level of certain aspects of speech and language, which is consistent with the clinical picture of a SLI. A pragmatic deficit is a consequence of damage of language structures and does not indicate the presence of disorders from the autistic spectrum.
