Abstract

The aim of the research is to determine the characteristics of articulatory abilities and phonemic hearing in preschool children. The sample included 50 children, of which 27 were boys (54%) and 23 (46%) were girls, aged six to seven. For the purpose of the research, the Triage Articulation Test (Kostić, Vladisavljević & Popović, 1983) and the Phonemic Hearing Test (Kostić, Vladisavljević & Popović, 1983) were used.

The results show that most of the children in the sample achieves high achievement in the tasks of auditory discrimination of phonemes from the group of vocals, plosives, laterals, nasals, as well as certain fricatives and affricates. The highest percentage of incorrect /partially correct answers was determined on the tasks of auditory discrimination of phonemic pairs Z-Ž and Č-Š. The results of the articulation abilities research showed that children most often incorrectly pronounce phonemes: R (26%), L and LJ (18-24%), as well as DŽ (16%). The comparison of children achievements in the pronunciation of phonemes and auditory discrimination tasks in relation to age and gender categories did not reach the set level of significance of 0.05. Early diagnosis of speech and language disorders in children is very important because experts have much more time to start and successfully complete treatment.
